The Tale of Sigiriya

The Story of King Kasyapa

King Kasyapa, the son of King Dhatusena, ascended to power through a dramatic and tragic turn of events. Dhatusena, who ruled Sri Lanka from 455 to 473 AD, was a formidable leader known for his contributions to Buddhism and the country’s agricultural advancements.

Dhatusena had two sons: Kasyapa and Mughalan. While Mughalan, the son of the royal consort, was the rightful heir, Kasyapa—born to a non-royal concubine—was eager to claim the throne. With the support of his army commander, Migara, who harbored personal grievances against Dhatusena, Kasyapa orchestrated a coup, overthrowing his father and allegedly having him killed.

Fearing retribution, Mughalan fled to India, leaving Kasyapa to rule. However, Kasyapa's reputation suffered greatly, and he was branded 'Pithru Gaathaka Kashyapa,' meaning 'Kasyapa the Patricide.' Isolated and fearing an attack from his brother, Kasyapa moved his capital from Anuradhapura to Sigiriya, where he built a grand fortress atop the massive rock.

The Lion Rock

The centrepiece of Sigiriya is the imposing Lion Rock, a massive monolith that once featured a colossal lion’s paw carved into its base. This grand entrance led visitors through the lion’s mouth and into the palace complex, symbolizing strength and majesty.

In the ensuing battle, Kasyapa was defeated, and Mughalan restored Anuradhapura as the capital of Sri Lanka. Following Kasyapa’s fall, Sigiriya was gradually abandoned and reclaimed by nature, fading into history until its rediscovery centuries later.

Rediscovery and Recognition

In the 19th century, British archaeologist H.C.P. Bell conducted extensive excavations and restorations, unveiling the grandeur of Sigiriya’s lost city. His efforts revealed the site’s elaborate gardens, sophisticated water management systems, and mesmerizing frescoes.

Today, Sigiriya stands as one of Sri Lanka’s most treasured landmarks, earning recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.
